Obituary for James Edward Roop

James Edward Roop, 80, of rural Kirksville, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

James was born in Kirksville, Missouri on November 26, 1937 the son of Gilbert and Nora Sparks Roop. On August 4, 1957 he married the love of his life Phyllis Ann Ledford.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two sister-in laws Linda and Patsy Ledford, one brother-in law, Randy Ledford.

James is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Ann Roop; one daughter, Melissa Billington and husband Rick of Kirksville; two grandchildren, Nick Billington and wife Jenny, Ashlyn Billington and finance Dalton Mendenhall; five great grandchildren, Justin McKim, Kelsea Mckim, Hailey Jordan, Easton Billington and Carson Billington; two sisters, Judith (Ora) Ballinger of Novinger and Joyce (Orin) Ledford of Green Castle; five brother-in laws, Leland (Fran) Ledford of Atkinson, Illinois, Ronnie (Virginia) Ledford of Green Castle, Missouri, Owen (Helen) Ledford of Novinger, Missouri, Orin (Joyce) Ledford of Green Castle, Missouri, Bill (Cindy) Smith of Iowa, City, Missouri along with several nieces and nephews.

James was a strong man with a heart of gold who loved many things. He was an adventurous man who loved to try new things. He enjoyed several vacations with his wife and family out west to Wyoming and Colorado to pan for gold and take in the scenery. He enjoyed many hobbies from bronzing baby shoes, gardening, hunting, fishing and brewing his own beer and wine. James was a very skilled with his hands and a master welder, he owned and operated a trenching company and later retired from Associated National Gas Company.

James loved an adored his wife, daughter and was especially blessed by his grandchildren. Nothing brought a bigger smile to James face than the blessing of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday July 11, 2018 at the Novinger Baptist Church in Novinger, Missouri. The family will greet friends at the church starting at 1:00pm until the time of service.

Gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to the Novinger Baptist Church or the family.
